Barry brilliance win Pairs

Barry brilliance win Pairs Men’s Over 60’s Pairs finals wrap Some superb bowls by Jim Barry (Cambridge) and the support of his lead Bruce Eagles (Sorrento) saw new champions crowned as the Men’s Over 60’s State Pairs finals wrapped up this afternoon at Doubleview Bowling Club. Barry and Eagles were looking like the team to beat after they cruised through sectional play at Manning on Monday and then were again outstanding in knockout rounds at Osborne Park on Tuesday before two more great wins today at Doubleview. They over powered the Leeming pair of Tim Mathein and Garry Simms 20-7 in the semi final before again proving too strong in the final winning 20-11. Their finals opponents were the Wanneroo team of Ken Boswell and Laurie Johnson who had been impressive defeating a number of good teams including previous Over 60’s champions Frank Carbone and Glyn Vaughan in the semi final 20-17. The final looked like going to the wire as the scores were tied on several occasions up to the 10th end were it was 9-9. Laurie Johnson was playing a great game to have Barry and Eagles under pressure on a number of ends however Barry was also playing well to keep his team right in it. The turning point came on the 11th end when Boswell jarred a toucher from Eagles to shift the jack for a couple of shots. Boswell was able to add some counters whilst Barry was trying to save the situation. Four down Barry with last bowl in hand played a bomb to trail jack for two shots – this was to be the start of a purple patch for Barry who was on fire over the next few ends. On the twelfth end when one down he again trailed the jack, this time for three which Boswell cut back with his last to one, before the Barry brilliance was back again on the next end. This time when one down he trailed the jack to team mate Eagles waiting bowls and added a counter to be holding four. Boswell played a good shot with his last but snuck through the cluster of bowls and just missed the jack. Another two on the next end meant the game was all but over at 9-18. Boswell and Johnson played well but just couldn’t match the great play from Barry and Eagles who were worthy champions in the end 20-11.
